Looking at the French election, you may be surprised, shocked. If you have a stake in it, you may be happy, disappointed, concerned, angry or just despondent. But the only true victory was the victory of the France of Yesterday, of the 1950s French parliamentary regime, 6 months governments and tactical alliances that ended up only when De Gaulle stepped in and cleared the decks in 1958.
It is the victory of the spirit of the political weathercocks, the old-school social-, Christian-, whatever- democrats.
It only took 10 years of Macron and team to bring France back to the politics of Yesteryear, the exclusive, rarefied conversations and arrangements, the ordinary betrayals, the once familiar compromises.
The French politics of the beef stew, not the one of the Concorde.
Over the past 10 years, there were « Great Debates », « citizen conventions », worksites and assorted workshops. That was for show.
What is left so far of this presidency? A budgetary hole, an international influence shrinking into oblivion, oh, and European bottle caps.
To work! The short term contracts of said politicians have been renewed. And that was the only true goal.
